Irish Minister of Agriculture Michael Creed said he will deploy a support scheme for the distribution of a beef fund of 100 million euros among farmers "in the very near future."
The minister also said that he is in ongoing negotiations with EU Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan about the potential impact of Brexit without a deal.
“The Commission has already provided € 50 million to Irish farmers in response to market pressure, and this could be in line with national funding. I look forward to deploying a support scheme for this funding in the very near future.
I also emphasized the need for the European Commission to be ready to take additional measures to mitigate the potential impact of Brexit without a deal on the agri-food and fish sectors, ”Creed said.
Just last week, the new president of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Breeding Association (ICSA), Edmond Phelan, announced that a beef fund of € 100 million should be distributed as soon as possible.
And the Irish Cream Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) said dairy farmers cannot be excluded from the assistance package.
“A very significant number of dairy farmers also have meat processing plants, and the assumption that their losses should be ignored is nothing more than a shame,” the ICMSA said.
