The Australian company Naturo from Queensland has patented a technology that more than doubles the shelf life of pasteurized milk.
The company's CEO Jeff Hastings said that during the processing they received milk that can be safely drunk for up to 60 days without additional “preparation”.
Although the exact details of how the milk was processed were not disclosed, Jeff Hastings said that it does not include heating, but kills bacteria, while preserving vitamins and enzymes. The increased shelf life allows the transportation of milk by sea to foreign markets, including the markets of Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, which is much cheaper than transporting the product by air.
According to Hastings, this technology has become "the largest breakthrough in the global dairy industry after pasteurization", invented more than 150 years ago.The company is currently exploring options for creating a pilot plant in Australia that is capable of producing 10 million liters of milk per year using new technology.
This is not the first time Naturo has been developing a technology that can significantly increase the shelf life of a natural product. In 2016, the company released a number of avocado products with a refrigerated shelf life of up to 10 days, even after opening the package.
