About two million individuals of juvenile fish such as the Baikal omul were released into the waters of the lake itself on the planet at the end of last week.
The action for the release of young animals to Baikal took place on the territory of the Bolsherechensky fish factory, which is located in the Republic of Buryatia.
According to officials of the regional administration, referring to the republic’s governor Alexei Tsydenov, the release of juvenile omul took place as part of the Ecology state program, which was established in the Baikal branch of the Glavrybvod Federal State Budgetary Institution. The aim of the project is to restore the abundance of Baikal omul, which has been banned from commercial fishing since October 2017 due to a critical decline in the population.
Employees of Glavrybvod a year ago laid a huge amount of omul roe for incubation - about half a billion pieces were harvested, which is almost five times more than a year earlier (in 2017) and eight times the amount of eggs laid in 2016.It will not be superfluous to note that the caviar of this year was obtained from fish in sparing conditions - spawned individuals were released back into the reservoir. Thanks to this method, more than half of the Baikal omul, which were hired for the production of hatching eggs, returned to their usual and natural habitat.
