The Danube-Drava National Park takes care of a small area where about 200 people are engaged in sheep breeding. Animals play a very important role in maintaining the area, as they not only mow the vegetation, but also fertilize the soil.
On the Dravaszentes site in the Danube-Drava National Park, only black sheep are kept. Farmers began to deal with ancient Hungarian animals 20 years ago, then they had only 10 copies. “A landscape with juniper cannot exist without grazing animals,” said Zoltan Horvath, head of the Central Landscape Division of the Drava Directorate of the Danube-Drava.
Interesting fact: Sheep usually weighs between 70 and 140 kilograms, but the officially recorded record is 247.2 kilograms..
“The main task of the population is to maintain dry sand lawns in juniper. In this area, pastures of higher quality are planted, on which sheep once grazed, and only dry hills remain. But only these less demanding breeds can stand it. It is important to have an animal that can soak in such an area, especially of invasive species, but also fertilize the lawn very well. Without them there would be no insects, and without them there would be no bird, ”Horvath said.
During the great geographical discoveries, sheep came to many countries with the help of sailors, in all regions these animals took root perfectly.
“Sheep meat is less fat,” continued Zoltan Horvath. “The largest amount is sold for a weekly slaughter, and the smaller amount - for a neighboring country. Unfortunately, wool is no longer available for sale today, but this is also true for other breeds. Lambs are now the main source of income, ”added the head of the Central Region of Drava.
