300 leva (150 euros) will be handed over by the Bulgarian government to each small farm or household that rejected pigs as a result of ASF.
The Bulgarian Food Safety Authority announced that compensation to farmers who sanitized their small farms after following orders to select domestic pigs will begin after September 1 of this year.
The amount of compensation should be 300 leva (150 euros) for each farm included in the 20-kilometer sanitary zone around industrial farms. Owners of up to five pigs will also be assisted.
They must have had pigs for personal use, not for sale in the market. They must be included in the list to be compiled by the mayor and certified by August 26, 2019.
The document must be certified by both the governor of the district and the official veterinarian, with signatures and seals. It should be submitted to the regional epizootic commission.
Money will be distributed through the mayors, who will announce the date and time of collection. The owner must declare that he will not keep pigs on his farm next year.
The measure was taken after the outbreak of ASF in Bulgaria affected 3 large farms, which led to the culling of 130 thousand pigs. Currently, the local pig industry is still worried that this disease could deplete the national stock of pigs by 600 thousand heads.
