The Bulgarian Food Safety Authority announced on Thursday, January 9, four new outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in the north-east of the country. pigs.
A large pig-breeding farm where African swine fever was detected is located in the village of Brestak near Varna. All animals that are kept there must be destroyed promptly.
At the end of last week, the disease was discovered on a farm of the same owner in the neighboring village of Nikola Kozlevo. 24 thousand pigs that were raised there were destroyed, and their bodies disposed of.
Scientists have found that pigs have their own language in which they communicate with each other.
Other recently discovered outbreaks of African swine fever are located in neighboring villages, on small private farms.
The ASF epidemic in Bulgaria appeared at the turn of the spring and summer of 2019. According to the Food Safety Authority, more than 230 thousand pigs have been killed since then. Veterinary services emphasize that the disease persists at low winter temperatures.
Recall that Bulgaria was the first country to announce the outbreak of African swine fever this year. Due to this disease, world production of pork meat in 2019 decreased by 4% and continues to decline.
