Locusts, operating in several regions of Russia, reached Ukraine. The hungry flock settled on the demarcation line, as reported by the Main Directorate of the State Food and Beverage Service in the Lugansk Region dated July 12, 2019.
Phytosanitary inspectors immediately examined the area and took samples of harmful insects, which they sent to the laboratory to determine the type of locust.
An emergency meeting was convened on July 13 to take emergency measures. According to the results of laboratory studies, these insects were identified as migratory locusts.
Migratory Locust
Local residents and beekeepers were notified of the completion of activities to destroy the locust population using chemicals. Residents were forbidden to graze cattle and to release poultry in the territory where the protective treatment is carried out. Beekeepers were advised to remove the hives to a safe place or close the bees inside the hives.
Since the pest distribution center is located on the demarcation line, it is impossible to use agricultural aviation, workers can land on mines. For this reason, sappers are involved in the processing.
Now in the territory of pest detection, a special regime for plant protection is being introduced. Destruction of locusts is carried out using chemicals permitted in Ukraine.
