World pork production fell by about 4% in 2019, forecasts for 2020 tons in 2020, which is 10% less than in 2019.
The large losses caused by the widespread spread of African swine fever (ASF) are decisive for this sharp drop in production. It is expected that only China in 2020 will reduce its own production by 25%.
Pork is becoming increasingly scarce in China. Due to the spread of African swine fever virus (ASF virus), domestic production has declined sharply.
In November 2019, the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted that the number of pigs in China due to ASF at the end of 2020 would include only 275 million animals. This will be a decrease of almost 170 million goals compared to 2017.
Pigs have a well-developed sense of smell, they help to search for truffles, and also sniff out drugs, while serving in the police.
After stagnating production in the EU in 2019, market experts expect pork production in the European Union to increase slightly in 2020. Nevertheless, weak demand in the EU and environmental regulations limit the expansion of production.
In contrast, a clear increase in production is expected in the US as well as in Brazil with growth rates of 4 and 5%. There, the animal population was further expanded. In addition, the revival of export demand leads to further investment in US production.
Piglet prices in 2019 were also significantly higher than in previous years. Fixed producer prices can be expected at least in the first half of 2020. Forecasts for 2020 are overlapped by the uncertainty of market development in China and the danger of further spread of ASF in Western Europe.
