The US Department of Agriculture has decided to abolish the mandatory GMO labeling of sugar and other highly purified products obtained from genetically modified raw materials.

The Ministry motivated their decision by the fact that the technology of genetically modified organisms is used exclusively to improve production efficiency, and the products themselves are not genetically modified.
As an example, government officials cited sugar beets, which are undergoing such powerful processing that they turn into pure sucrose, and there is absolutely no protein left in the product.
It should be noted that for the first time GMO products appeared in the second half of the 80s of the last century and since then disputes about their benefits and harms have not stopped.
GMO products are foods derived from artificially modified organisms. With genetic modification using genetic engineering, changes are made directly to parts of the genome that are fundamentally important for a particular organism or culture.
The purpose of such artificial changes in the genotype is to improve the properties of the plant or animal.
It is impossible to determine with a naked eye whether a particular product has undergone genetic modification or not. The legislation of many countries contains rules requiring producers and sellers to affix appropriate labels on food products about the presence (or absence) of transgenes in them.
Soy and its variations, corn and its derivatives, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, onions, wheat and wheat products, rice and rice products, sugar beets, and sunflower oil are most susceptible to gene modification.
