The Mirgorod breed was bred in the 19th century, but was finally approved in 1940. She became the first breed of pig Ukrainian breeding. Today the breed is on the verge of extinction and scientists of the country are doing everything in order not to lose it completely.
In Ukraine there are only 6 sows, 2 boars and 4 piglets of this breed. But they cannot become successors of the clan, because they are in a kinship.
Senior researcher at the breeding laboratory of the Poltava Institute of Pig Breeding and Agricultural Production of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Pavel Vashchenko said that this is all that remains of a small population of Mirgorod pigs. The remaining thoroughbred pigs were disposed of last summer due to ASF.
Ukrainian scientists plan to restore the number of pigs of this breed. They are going to buy Mirgorod pigs from the population. To establish the fact of belonging to the breed, scientists are ready to do DNA tests. Pigs of this breed are black-pied in color, and their lard and meat are considered the standard for quality and thickness (about 4 cm).
In the country there are no statistics on the content of pigs of Mirgorod breed in personal households of citizens. About 10 individuals are in the FC "Dawn" in the Kharkov region.
Enthusiasts intend to use sperm, which is stored in the bank of genetic resources of the Institute for Breeding and Genetics to fertilize surviving sows. Thus, scientists plan to completely restore the breed, said Pavel Vashchenko.
