The Karachi Dairy Farmers Association on Wednesday unilaterally raised the price of milk by 23 rupees per liter; Now the goods will be sold at 120 rupees per liter at retail outlets, which will cause a wave of anger among consumers who are already suffering from rising inflation.
The Dairy Farmers Association said the government refused to raise the price, despite repeated demands, and this “forced” the farmers to make their own decisions.
“We met with government officials and presented them with our case, but they did not pay attention to it,” said Shakir Gujar from the association. "The prices for fodder have increased significantly, combined with higher fuel prices, which increases transportation costs."The government decided to check the price, but only after the farmers announced a price increase. Official sources said the city administration announced the price of milk was 94 rupees per liter, while a large number of milk sellers sold it at prices ranging from 100 to 180 rupees.
Officials said that city administration teams raided several dairy stores and fined owners for selling milk at a price higher than the stated price. The provincial government also asked the city administration to take tough measures against those who arbitrarily raised milk prices by about 30 percent in violation of the law.
