The popularity of cranberries in the world is growing. In Ukraine, it is harvested in the wild, although the country has all the conditions for growing berries on an industrial scale, experts say.
The leading global cranberry producers are Belarus, Latvia, Romania, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Ukraine could take a place among them if it were to switch to industrial cultivation of berries.
So far, berries in the country are harvested in the wild, while other producers have been growing it for a long time. Wild berry is more useful, but the profitability of cultivated cranberries is several times higher. Her berries are large, up to 2 cm in diameter, marketable fruits with a yield of up to 2 kg / m². In addition, the demand for the product is stable and growing all the time.
Another advantage of cranberries is that it grows on acidic peat soils, where no crops can be grown. Cranberry in these conditions feels great and gives a harvest for 60 years. The largest number of soils that are suitable for cultivation of this berry is in Ternopol, Volyn and Zhytomyr regions.
At first, the organization of cranberry planting will require an investment, but they can be partially compensated by the state as part of a support program for agricultural producers, which operates in 2017–2021.
According to experts, the profitability of the cranberry farm will be 36.9%, which means making a profit of about 37 cents per dollar of income for 60 years.
